Painting with Hot Wax: an exploration of encaustics with Regina B. Quinn

There is a very special kind of luminosity that painters can achieve by working with encaustic paints. These paints, made from beeswax, damar resin, and pigments, are melted on a hot palette and then painted on panels or other substrates.

Join Regina B. Quinn, President of International Encaustic Artists, for a one-day session where you will learn a wide range of techniques for building translucent and opaque layers, creating smooth or deeply textured surfaces, and incorporating other media to create artworks that have a unique glow – almost as if lit from within.

Demonstrations and explorations will be appropriate for artists who are new to encaustics as well as those with some experience. You’ll have the opportunity to create several small works during the session – perhaps perfect holiday gifts for friends and family!

About Regina:

Regina B Quinn is an encaustic artist who lives and paints in Gilboa, New York after three decades in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. While her career encompasses painting, photography, ceramics, printmaking, and theatrical set design and painting, she now focuses more fully on encaustics and writes: “I was struck by the luminosity and subtlety of Doug and Mike Starn’s encaustics several years ago, and immediately sensed that encaustic was my medium—one that could give voice to my aesthetic, my sensibility, and my quiet personality…I haven’t looked back.”

Regina serves on the International Encaustic Artists Board as President and as Director of Social Media, as well as on the Woodstock Art Association & Museum’s Board of Directors as Chair of Outreach. Regina teaches encaustic painting internationally, online and in person. She was featured in a two-person exhibition with Anne Sutherland at Roxbury Arts in 2022 and has received several awards for her encaustics including the Faber Birren National Color Award, the Cooperstown Art Association’s Grand Prize, and the WAAM New Visions Award. She is represented by the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, NY and her work is included in the permanent collections of the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center, in Brooklyn, NY and the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
